When we’re doing our tasks/projects sometimes we found ourselves doing things that is totally unrelated with our current tasks, making our current tasks seems endless.

below I will give you some tips that I hope can help you on focusing more on your current tasks/projects.

Make sure that your body is well prepared for the current task/project.
Believe me when your body isn’t feeling so well, it would be really hard to concentrate, it’s better for you to get enough rest and therefor increase your effectiveness, rather than forcing yourself through the project. but of course if you’re on a tight deadline you may want to skip this step.
note: please differentiate between not having a fit body and laziness.

Remove any possible distraction from you.
There are lots of things that could make us off-track from our current task, so be sure to remove any of it before starting your task. here are some of it :

Turning off your TV/Radio unless you work better with noises (as some of us do).

If you’re working on a computer, turn off all of unrelated programs/application, and any unnecessary website that doesn’t have anything to do with your current task -and yes that would include social site, news feeder, and email too-.

Have only related items on your desk, put away everything else that would distract you. Keep it clean, simple and related.

Put a “don’t disturb” sign on your door, or just tell them that your don’t want to be disturb for the current time so your family would understand, and I’m sure they would gladly support you.

Create a plan for your tasks.
I know this would take time on its own, but trust me its worthed since this can help you to keep track with your current tasks. Here are some tips for creating your plan.

Understand what is the overall tasks, and break them down into smaller task.

If it’s a big project and you wouldn’t be able to finish it for a day, then insert those mini tasks into your day planning.

Set a mini deadline for each of the small tasks use a timer, and give small rewards to yourself each time you finish one, like stretch your body or just get a fresh air for a minute.

Put the plan in a place when you can see it all the time (when your doing your tasks).

Now act! act! act!, those previous step would become useless if you don’t act, do your tasks with discipline and stick to your plan but don’t be to strict to yourself, remember plans were made to keep us on track, not to make us like a programmed robot .

Give yourself another rewards, for finishing your tasks on the end of the day, finishing half of your project, and fully completed your project. The point is to keep yourself motivated.

Cheers, and keep on focus

As we know our brains control almost all of our action in life, from moving, seeing, listening to reasoning and thinking. But with our daily activity this kind of activity become more and more automated as we start to get used to it, and if we are not careful we will end up not using our brain much, just like the rats put in the second cage in Diamond experiment.

To actively improve our brain we should always use our brain, like learn more, as it will create more connections between brain cells, even if we don’t practice the skill for decades the connections will still exist, maybe weakened a bit but not gone.

There are a few tips to how to improve our brain performance which I collected from several source over book and internet:

1. Do a body exercise, you would gain two benefits by doing this, first it would help improve your cardiovascular health and second it would reduce your stress level, why because when we workout our body release some kind of stress reducer called endorphin, see http://greenbenefit.blogspot.com/2007/11/not-heart-to-hurt.html on benefit of cardio exercise.

2. Exercise your brain, by learning new things, like sutdy foreign language, playing brain stimulating games, or even finding a new hobby, as it will create more connectivity between your brain cells.

3. Train your motoric skill, use your left hand to write if you are right handed, or do juggling.

3. Always have enough sleep (6 hours is common, 8-9 hours is ideal), without enough sleep would causes cognitive impairment later in life, and beside that you won’t be able to think clearly and would be easier to forget something.

4. Get enough food for your brain, like antioxidant vitamins, B vitamins (B12) and folate are important for brain cells function.

5. Keep an eye on your health, disease like blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity may increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

6. Recheck your drugs, since some prescription and over the counter drugs may cause memory or concentration problems.

7. Reduce your smoking habit.

8. Excess on caffeine and alcohol are bad, try to reduce it.

9. Meditate; if you can meditate properly it can help reduce your stress level, since stress can cause a short term memory loss, inability to focus, confusion and agitation.
